I am proud of you.
You do not come through unexpected loss and grief unscathed, but instead are cultivating new found power and strength to take almost anything that life throws your way.
As a survivor of the sudden loss of the person you love, you sometimes don’t recognize your bravery and capability.
I want to let you know that you have unbelievable courage, fortitude, and resiliency.
You are surviving the unthinkable and bearing the unbearable. Anything else will pale in comparison. You will rejoin life after tragedy—to find light in darkness, discover hope in despair, and enjoy life in death.
I wish I could tell you that your grief would resolve, your pain would end, and that all the unpleasant feelings and upsetting emotions would be over. Somehow, I think you may already know that grief does not “magically” end. I can promise you, however, that the pain subsides when you actively mourn your loss and grieve fully. Healing is possible.
Reflect for just a moment on the hours and days after your loved one died. Look how far you’ve come—you are surviving the unimaginable—the death of someone you love who you never expected to die. You’re adapting to what you thought you couldn’t. You’re living again in a different way, or perhaps living for the first time knowing that life is finite.
Grieving, mourning, and healing will likely be the hardest work you will ever do. The result can be an existence of meaning, fulfillment, and even joy as you incorporate both the grief and love for your beloved into your daily life.
The ultimate gift to yourself is to love and live while you build an existence alongside grief.
How will you honor yourself?
